(7/20/26) Nature and Selected Essays - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson is perhaps my favorite writer now. Self-Reliance, The Over-Soul, Circles — some of the most beautiful passages I’ve ever read, nonfiction or otherwise. Emerson really speaks to me and inspires me to be a better person. He gives me hope for the power of the individual and of humanity. 9/10.

“The landscape, the figures, Boston, London, are facts as fugitive as any institution past, or any whiff of mist or smoke, and so is society, and so is the world. The soul looketh steadily forawrds, creating a world before her, leaving worlds behind her."

(5/21/26) The Kingdom of God is Within You - Leo Tolstoy

A book that every Christian should read. Tolstoy is quite a compelling writer and lays out a wonderful argument. Not only does he assert the moral philosophy of Jesus in opposition to hierarchy and the state, but he also provides an important metaphysical message regarding the nature of faith. Many parallels with Kierkegaard, especially in that last light. We must reject the aesthetic and ethical modes and embrace the religious mode of life. Kierkegaard affirms this, but Tolstoy shows that through this act, as individuals, we hasten the freedom of all men from the violence of the state. 9/10.

“Men cannot know when the day and the hour of the kingdom of god will come, because it’s coming depends on themselves alone. The answer is like that of the wise man who, when asked whether it was far to the town, answered, ‘Walk!’”

Walk, my friends.

"If it is the future you seek, then I tell you that you must come to it with empty hands. You must come to it alone, and naked, as the child comes into the world, into his future, without any past, without any property, wholly dependent on other people for his life. You cannot take what you have not given, and you must give yourself. You cannot buy the Revolution. You cannot make the Revolution. You can only be the Revolution. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere." - Shevek (The Dispossessed)

"In the thought of tomorrow there is a power to upheave all thy creed, all the creeds, all the literatures of the nations, and marshal thee to a heaven which no epic dream has yet depicted." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"If we live truly, we shall see truly." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"People wish to be settled; only as far as they are unsettled is there any hope for them." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
